When painting outdoors, weather is always a concern. Wind, rain, heat and cold, and even the sun present possible obstacles when painting outside. Navigating these challenges requires monitoring the forecast and planning accordingly, for example even something as simple as deciding which side of the building to paint first requires experience in managing weather. Wind can cause overspray to settle in troublesome areas (like your neighbor’s car), but with the appropriate protection paint stays where it’s meant to.

Weather is also a concern to the longevity of the paint. Exposure to sun, moisture, extreme heat, or extreme cold can cause damage to coatings over time. Here, product knowledge is essential to ensuring your home continues to look beautiful for years to come. Not all paints are equal! If you paint your home with the same product inside and out you’ll have very different results! Exterior paints are formulated to have high UV resistance to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight.

The material being painted also matters. Wood, metal, and stucco each require different strategies to achieve the best results. Is the surface rough? Smooth? Porous? Impermeable? Preparation, product choice, and application are all determined by the surface to be painted, and no two houses are ever quite the same! Each exterior painting project requires a specific, detailed, plan of action to achieve the best results. Sometimes the existing coating is failing due to age, poor application, or damage. Knowing how to remove or repair the previous coating is absolutely essential to achieving great results. More often than not, if new paint is applied to a failing coating the process is accelerated and the old and new peel right off together. This is extremely common in industrial applications because of the harsh environment the paint is subjected to. Because of this, Mitch is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to dealing with failed coatings and surface preparation.

Painting outside also has advantages. When painting in an enclosed space, using spray equipment is often not practical due to concerns around ventilation. When painting outside, ventilation is never a concern. Spray application is extremely fast and effective compared to traditional methods with a brush and roller, and is the ideal choice when painting outside. Spray painting also requires hundreds of hours on the trigger to master the application process. Mitch has been applying paint by spray for over four years in a variety of applications, from front doors to metal roofs, and just about everything in between.
